7workshops7 - Summer in the City

Between August 18th and 29th we will run 7 simultaneous workshops in open software and hardware for designers and artists at our studio in Malmo, Sweden. Themes will be related to either physical computing or computer vision. There are both basic and advanced workshops that vary in length between 2 and 3 days.

20080603: confirmed the presence of Tom Igoe, Casey Reas and David Cuartielles during our Summer Workshops!!

Arup

The last 7 weeks I have been in London working together with the Arup Foresight team with one of their projects called Faraday. The project is about how Science can be taught in the British schools in key stage 3-4 and the end product is a building proposal for two new Brittish schools that is being built this year. Together we have developed concepts and end product specification in six different categories ranging from how robotics can be used in educations and what and where to buy the products to how to display the history of the school and use that information in education.

1scale1 going soft

A quick and dirty, home made breadboard of the soft kind made with stripes of conductive foam, cloth and some thread.

Moving Planks

The Moving planks project is a collaboration between the 1scale1 and the ITU University of Copenhagen based upon Anna Vallgarda research on composite material. The goal was to visualise sound into wood. The piece consists of ten planks that are individually programmed to react on sound and do so by bending when spoken to and retract if the surroundings are quiet.

ARCA

(Created by Andreas Göransson, Tony Olsson, Fernando LBarrajón, Oliver Vallée
Mattias Svensson and Henrik Strid)

 Abstract

Arca is an full body experience which is created by interaction, communication and play within an space where computer games meet abstract electronic art, video and sound installation.

Arca is a two player game set in a cube. The mission to complete puzzles using both players physical and logical skills. But only one player can leave as the winner.

Vision

Poweruino

PoweruinoPoweruino is the latest circuit from 1scale1. It has the possibility to control more power demanding components with PWM than an ordinary Arduino yet still retains the possibility to use the numerous sensors and code examples available to the Arduino platform. It also incorporates pins for i2c communication and a possibility to solder an RGB high power led straight onto the board. The board is designed as a part of my final thesis work at the Interaction design program at Malmo Univeristy circulating around color and light. The circuit will be used to visualize power consumption by illuminating and animating a wall with different colors.

Splashmo V.0.2

Splashmo V.0.2

Splashmo is a 3d drawing environment that is controlled by a mobile phone. By the use of a mobile phone and the Splashmo mobile application any one can turn their mobile into a artistic creation tool. In this version of Splashmo it is possible to navigate within the three dimensional space and at any given position, turn on the drawing mode and start creating. Splashmo limits the physical use of the mobile phone to one designated area which wont expand more the 10m because of the use of bluetooth communication

The goal whit Splashmo is to inspire new thoughts about the use of mobile phones and what happens if the mobility of a mobile phone is limited but also, to create a platform for further development where the goal is to extend the function of the normal mobile phone.

Business To Buttons: New Interaction Techniques

During the BusinessToButtons conference in Malmo, D. Cuartielles will introduce Physical Prototyping as a technique for interaction designers to create new artifacts. The lecture will be on June 12th at about 13.30 at the main conference hall.

Within the same context, but on Saturday June 14th, the 1scale1 team together with TENK's design group will host a workshop in creating a multiplayer wireless game in only four hours. During the session we will introduce the use of microcontrollers and other digital gadgetry in the production of interactive artifacts and software running in a computer as the main game engine.

7workshops7 is also inviting U to social activities in the evening:

7workshops7 will be running simultaneously as Malmoe festival (in Swedish Malmöfestivalen), and that means that there will be many opportunities for social activities during the evenings.

The Malmoe Festival, is Malmoe's biggest and on Sweden's most visited events of the year. The 8-day festival takes place in the second half of August and attracts over 1.5 million visitors every time.

Along with free admission, the Malmöfestivalen offers its visitors a variety of entertainment: over 250 concerts and music performances, lots of great Swedish food to taste, an amusement park, theater-film shows, artwork market, performances, and other forms of entertainment.

One of the highlights (besides the free admission) is the variety of concerts which range from classical music to pop/rock, and even electronic music.

1scale1 at RagTag

The RagTag workshop was organized by the Performing Pictures group at the Interactive Institute in Stockholm in February this year. David Cuartielles spoke about the latest cases 1scale1 has been working with. You can take a look at the David's  talk documentation that has been released here recently.

The workshop included a series of lectures and practical sessions where practicioners presented ways to deal with technology applied to arts. The main focus was new forms of video both as a representation system, a narrative tool, a technological platform, and a performative tool.

David also collaborated with Bengt Sjolen in hacking several platforms for displaying pictures and moving images. Bengt's talk was very inspiring and was documented here.
